Whole House Water Filters - A Four-Step Process

When you buy the parts individually, setting up your home filtration system so that it produces good, clean drinking water can be expensive. Whole house water filters are much more cost effective and allow you to have a quality source for your plants, for bathing, or for whenever you need a contaminant-free supply. The major difference between whole house systems and those at various points throughout is with the whole house system, the supply is filtered where it actually gains access to the house. This way, every outlet receives filtered water.

Drinking water filtration systems such as those that feature reverse osmosis are generally set up in addition to a water treatment system. Some filtration systems for the whole house add chemicals and these chemicals can make it unpleasant to drink. By adding a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink you can have safe drinking source whenever you want. You can add this unit wherever you need it. Common places that people add such a system in their house, in addition to when they want to drink water is where they use it to furnish pets and plants with a filtered supply. The bathroom is another common place. Although you may not drink in your bathroom, you probably use it to wash your face and brush your teeth.

Four Basic Steps

There are four basic steps to whole house systems. The first step, referred to as the pre-filtering process, removes contaminants of a specific micron, usually five. This step is necessary to ensure that a significant amount of water is able to flow and that there is a least likelihood chance that the filter will become clogged with contaminants. The second step involves removing chlorine, the chemical that causes it to taste and smell bad. Once chlorine is removed, the drinking water is treated with activated charcoal to improve its taste. During the final step the remaining contaminants are flushed down the drain.

Installing filters for the whole house can be performed by a specialist. However, most companies that offer these products include detailed instructions with diagrams to make assembly a simple process. Once you have the system installed, you only need to replace the filters every six months.
