How Charcoal Water Filters Work
Charcoal water filters are used in more homes than any other filtering media.
They are available in every type of filtration system, whether it be an under
the sink or whole house model. These systems can be used alone, or in
combination with another method of purification. Pitchers designed to clean
water for drinking use this media in the filtering process. Charcoal filters are
the most affordable of all types.
The porosity of charcoal makes it effective in a drinking water filtration
system. Activated charcoal is subjected to a chemical process that creates a
higher level of absorbency. They are effective for removing chlorine and the
bacteria in water that is known to cause illness. Some manufacturers use
antibacterial protection to the filter for added protection from microorganisms.
The best filters are solid, rather than granulated charcoal. These are more
effective for removing contaminants. Look for a system that uses solid media,
especially for water your family will drink. You should be aware that, while
this method removes many dangerous bacteria, it won’t remove all. This is
especially true if your drinking source is heavily contaminated. This can happen
in municipal supplies, but is more common in private wells. If you have a well,
you should have a multi stage filtering system. Many homeowners opt for a whole
house system and a separate under sink water filter for their drinking supply.
These filtration systems are fairly easy to install and maintain. Most
homeowners can install them easily. If you prefer, a plumber can install it in
little time. You will need to change your charcoal filter approximately every
six months. You may need to change it more frequently or less, depending on the
amount of water that passes through the system and how much of the water is used
to drink.
