Why You Should Use Flouride Water Filters

Flouride water filters have become popular among people concerned about the health effects of fluoride in drinking water. There is a lot of controversy regarding the treatment of water. The process started back in the 1940s out of concern for children’s teeth. At the time, this was considered safe and effective at preventing tooth decay. This belief has been questioned in recent years, causing the rise in popularity of filters to remove flouride from drinking water.

The main reason for this water treatment process has been to reduce tooth decay. Yet, studies have shown no noticeable difference in cavities between children drinking water with fluoride and those drinking water without it. In fact, the same studies have shown potential health problems related to treated water. These include dental fluorosis, digestive disturbances, osteoporosis, immune dysfunction and kidney disease.

Too much flouride can be damaging to the teeth, causing a condition known as dental fluorosis. This condition is most common in children who receive fluoride from more than one source, most often this happens when the kids take vitamin supplements with fluoride and also get it in treated drinking water. The teeth become brown with noticeable pitting.

Scientists have long believed that treatment process using flouride is unnecessary and unhealthy. The evidence is so overwhelming that several countries have banned its use, including Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, France, Belgium, Denmark and Luxemburg. Several other countries are conducting further studies and strongly considering legislation to ban the process of treating water with flouride. So far, only European countries have banned its use. The only option in North America is to remove it yourself with filters.

Filters are made to filter out the flouride, but not every filtering process will remove it. A wide variety of products are available to treat either a single faucet, or your entire home. You will need a plumber to install whole house treatment filters, but you can install an under sink water filter easily yourself. Whichever model you choose, make sure it states on the package that it removes fluoride.
