The Pros and Cons of Using a Reverse Osmosis Filter System

Reverse osmosis is by far one of the most popular types of purifiers that people use to purify their water. There are a variety of these reverse osmosis filter systems on the market and they all use a basic process to purify water. Water flows into the system and pre-filters acting as strainers remove everything that will not fit through the pin-size strainer holes. The number of pre-filters varies according to the number of stages in a particular system. Any chemicals remaining in the water are treated with activated carbon that exists as a final step to filter impurities. All of the contents that are removed from the water are rinsed down the drain.

While reverse osmosis is an excellent purifier, it may not be appropriate in all cases. You should evaluate the pros and cons of using a reverse osmosis water purifier before you have the filter installed in your home. The reason reverse osmosis is so popular is because its filters are designed to eliminate a wide assortment of contaminants including bacteria, pesticides, and chemicals. However, it is possible for the dangerous contaminants such as bacteria to penetrate the delicate membrane that acts as a filter. If a test of your water reveals that your water is contaminated with a large amount of bacteria, a reverse osmosis system may not be your complete solution. You may need to couple the purification system with another method such as ultraviolet light. This can result in a greater expense to you, both for purchasing and maintaining the equipment.

Another shortcoming of a reverse osmosis purification system is the amount of water that the system uses. This is even more of a disadvantage to people who require the more stringent purifier that consists of five stages of purification than the standard three. On the flip side of that disadvantage is the benefit of eliminating a higher percentage of impurities. You will need to evaluate how much you are willing to invest to purify your water. Another benefit of using reverse osmosis is the installation procedure. You can generally install the different filters involved in a purifier yourself. Even if you hire a plumber to install the purification system for you, it shouldn’t take an extended amount of time.
