Types of Undersink Water Filters
Undersink water filters
can be used by themselves or in conjunction with a whole house filter. Millions
of people become ill every year due to bacteria and pollution in both city water
and private wells. People are no longer waiting for the government to clean up
the water, but are doing it themselves with filters both under the sink and
treating the whole house. Others don’t think the government’s standards are high
enough. There are several choices including carbon and reverse osmosis.
A reverse osmosis under
sink filter is useful with a well or city water. They are effective for
removing chlorine and other purification chemicals used in a municipal supply.
For wells with a whole house softener, they remove the sodium that is a by
product of the softening process. In addition, they can remove lead from your
pipes. A reverse osmosis filter installed under the sink uses a two step process
to clean the water. The first filter removes sediment then the membrane strains
out smaller impurities and bacteria.
In addition to a reverse osmosis system, installing a carbon undersink filtering
system will remove chlorine, lead and sediment from your drinking water. They
are great if you are concerned about the chlorine smell. Look for a model that
uses carbon filters, rather than granules for the best quality. Keep in mind
that it won’t remove bacteria or pesticides, but if you’re just looking to get
rid of the chlorine taste it will do the job well.
A good quality filter or reverse osmosis purification system under the sink is
much more affordable in the long term, than buying bottled water to drink.
Recent studies question the safety of bottled water, which is sometimes no
cleaner than what runs from your tap. When shopping, consider the cost of
operation and replacement filters in addition to the price. Choose a reliable
dealer and ask about the warranty. Don’t rush to buy right away. Read some
filter reviews and get your water tested to be sure you’re getting the right
kind for your needs.
