Water Purification Tablets Provide a Clean Drink Anywhere

Water purification tablets are used to purify water when you travel. Pollution and other contaminants have made the rivers and lakes of the world unsafe. The tablet method is often used by people who enjoy camping and backpacking. Their light weight and portable size makes them perfect for carrying along with you on a trip. Purification tablets provide potable drinking water from any source.

Potable water tablets are iodine. The size of the tablet can vary, so follow the manufacturer’s directions for proper use. Generally, the directions will tell you to use one or two tablets which purifies one quart. The temperature will effect how much you need to add. Colder water requires more iodine. Fill the bottle, add the tablets and let the bottle sit for thirty minutes to allow them to dissolve completely. Shake the bottle for a minute and squirt some onto the ground, to be sure the mouth of the bottle is rinsed of any impurities that may be there.

When you pack potable tablets for your trip, make sure to protect them from light and excessive heat. Heat and moisture reduce the effectiveness of the tablet to purify water. You can store them for a few years, if they aren’t opened. Once the bottle is opened, you need to use them within six months or dispose of them. Out of date tablets are not effective for killing bacteria and you could get sick. Throw away opened bottles at the end of the season to avoid attempting drinking water purification using an expired product on your next trip.

The most common complaint from people who use tablets to purify is the taste of the water. Some people find the taste of the purified water offensive. There are methods for improving the taste to make it more potable. Ascorbic acid can be purchased separately and added to the bottle after thirty minutes have passed. Adding anything to the bottle for taste can interfere with the purification process. Some manufacturers include tablets to neutralize the iodine. These generally contain ascorbic acid.
