Well Water Treatment – What You Can Do

Well water treatment is about maintenance as well as correcting issues with the water itself and the residential filtration system. There are several tests that private owners can use to determine the quality of their supply. While some tests are standard, others are not. It's recommended that owners with private wells test those wells at least once a year, but also before, during and after any major construction in the area that could affect their supply.

Residential water filtration systems are not always common when dealing with wells. Compared to a city treated or municipal water supply, well water is typically fresher and 'cleaner' tasting. Testing the well can lead to better quality water for all needs, including washing, drinking and cooking.

A hardness test can determine if the well water needs softening. The pH level of the water can be checked to determine acidity. High arsenic levels can be determined, as can microbiological tests looking for bacteria and nitrates. Once a quality analysis has been determined, a treatment plan involving a residential filtration system, purifier or conditioner can be implemented.

Treating well water at your residence can be handled through point of entry purifiers, handling color or odor problems and hard water conditions. Point of use systems such as reverse osmosis water filters can eliminate contaminants, but stand a better chance if the supply needs to be softened beforehand. Annual or bi-annual chlorination of the well can reduce contaminants as well, keeping levels of bacteria and algae relatively low.

Private residences with their own wells benefit from a steady supply source and are often free of the problems that plague city treatment facilities. However, freedom from those problems does not relieve owners of all issues with water purification. It's important to understand and take care of the well and the filtration system so that it continues to offer a steady supply of clean, fresh H2O for drinking and more.
